The Best Books of All Time:
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee:
To Kill A Mockingbird is a coming of age story about a young girl named Scout, who grows up in a small town in Alabama. The plot takes place during the great depression when Scout is 6-9 years old and brings up societal issues such as racial inequality and unfairly judging strangers. One of the main plot lines in To Kill A Mockingbird is when Scout’s lawyer father Atticus defends an innocent black man who is accused of raping a young, white woman. Another interesting plot line follows Scout’s suspicion of a reclusive neighbor Boo Radley who Scout initially imagines as a murderer but who ends up saving Scout and her brother from a real murderer.
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde:
The Picture of Dorian Gray is a fascinating yet dark tale about an initially moral, young man who descends into darkness and internally becomes a dark, twisted version of the innocent youth that he once was. In the tale Dorian is given a portrait of himself as long as he keeps the portrait safe his likeness will age instead of body. Was Dorian’s decision to essentially trade his soul for immortality and eternal beauty a wise decision or the cause of his downfall, you’ll have to read The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde to find out.
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy:
While War and Peace is infamous for its length, it’s a grippy, page turner and will keep you hooked. In fact, don’t be surprised if you binge read War and Peace in a few days. What makes War and Peace so special is that it tells the stories of a wide variety of individuals who live through Napoleon’s invasion of Russia. Tolstoy is such a skilled writer, that he beautifully paints each character’s story and gives each character plenty of depth. Some characters whose stories you’ll get to read about include a cynical soldier, a socialite whose love story is cut short when her husband dies and an illegitimate son of a count who becomes one of the richest men in Russia in a single night.
One of the unique features of War and Peace is that from one chapter to the next you can be transported from a high society party in Moscow to the front lines of a battlefield.
